I visited the Nafsika when it opened. And again a few years later. Cut a couple of decades and I'm back with wife and a bunch of teenagers. These can be demanding customers. But the key thing to remember about the Nafsika is that it's a family hotel, by which I means it's owned and run by a family and not just catering for kids (which it had in abundance when we stayed this year - and a fine time they were all having). The same family ran it back in 1979 when the hotel stood pretty much alone on this beautiful beach. Of course, it's changed; it has competition though it's position remains delightfully uncrowded at the edge of town, overlooking the beach. It's got a nice pool and a great pool bar. Yes, it's pretty much unchanged inside but for the availability of A/C in the rooms (and we were glad to have that) but that's part of its charm. It's one of the oldest hotels in Agios Stefanos. If it resembles a New York brownstone then maybe that's because the second generation of the family that own it are from that city? Home away from home? Everyone speaks English at the Nafsika; the staff are great with all ages, working the crowd, making sure all comers are looked after. The food is good, Greek home-cooking (what else?). I agree the breakfasts could do with sparkling up a tad. But there are plenty of delicious options on the menu subject to an extremely modest price hike (two euros for a full English sounds like a no-brainer to me). And the rates are spectacularly good value (check out their web site - they are posted there). My wife and the teens loved the hotel, loved the bar, the music, and the manager, Speros. And if he needs to tend to the gardens (as one 'critic' complained) when guests are about, why not? After all, it's 'home' - and while we there, it was ours' too.
